Mrs. Somers' Bio:
Dear Families,
Welcome to my classroom!! I am so excited about the opportunity to work with your student. I grew up on a farm in Ithaca. I have a degree in both elementary education and special education from Central Michigan University. I also have an endorsement in early childhood education with minors in child development and child psychology. In addition, I have a master equivalent with 30+ hours of grad work in the areas of writing, language arts, individualized and differentiated instruction, autism, and special education. I did my student teaching at Leonard Elementary in Developmental Kindergarten and also at the middle school. During my student teaching experience, I also had an opportunity to work with the after school gifted and talented program.
My first teaching job landed me in Clare. I was then asked to finish out the school year at Leonard for a 5th grade teacher who was on maternity leave. After 3 ½ years, Ovid-Elsie was in need of a special education teacher. I was then moved to EEK and have been teaching in this position for 10 years.
In addition to teaching special education, I have also had the opportunity to work closely with local colleges and Universities in their teacher education program. I have supervised and graded several Baker College Students for their field experience classes as well as hosted five student teachers from Saginaw Valley State University and Central Michigan University. I have also received quite an education in Polka music since I married the voice of WOES.
Outside of school, Kevin and I have three children (Braydon 6th grade, Addison 4th grade, and Jacob 2nd grade.) They keep us busy enough with piano lessons, hunter safety, soccer, and gymnastics but we also farm, have a lawn mowing business, and of course our Music Maker Djing business. In our spare time we enjoy traveling, camping, and making memories with our children.
